What impact means for FMO

At FMO, impact drives everything we do. We invest in the private sector that contributes to a more sustainable and inclusive future.

Our Strategy 2030 Pioneer-Develop-Scale, focuses on three interconnected priorities that address how economies create opportunities for people, how those opportunities are shared, and how development can be sustained in a changing climate. These priorities are reflected in three Sustainable Development Goals:

SDG 8 | Decent Work and Economic Growth

Economic growth creates opportunities

Through our investments, we support businesses that create jobs, strengthen local economies, and improve working conditions. We believe that decent work strengthens livelihoods and supports economic growth.

What do we mean by decent work?

Beyond the number of jobs created, decent work is about supporting people's well-being through fair treatment, equal opportunity, safe and healthy working conditions, and respect for fundamental workers' rights.

How does FMO contribute?

  • We provide long-term capital in emerging markets to support business growth, create quality jobs and drive innovation
  • Our customers are required to adhere to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards aligned with IFC Performance Standards and the ILO’s core labor principles.
  • We expand access to finance for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), key job creators often underserved by traditional financing

SDG 10 | Reducing Inequalities

Inclusive development succeeds when more people can access opportunities and benefit from economic progress.

Reducing inequalities between countries We invest in Least Developed Countries and fragile contexts, where significant development challenges and financing gaps persist, supporting entrepreneurship, economic growth, and long-term resilience

Reducing inequalities within countries Low-income populations and underserved groups often face barriers to economic opportunities, financial services, and essential goods and services. FMO supports businesses that broaden access through inclusive business and economic empowerment.

Gender equality and economic inclusion Gender equality is an important part of FMO's approach to reducing inequalities. We support businesses and financial institutions that expand opportunities for women as entrepreneurs, employees, leaders and participants in value chains. We also work with clients to strengthen inclusive business practices and create environments where women can thrive.

FMO is a founding member of the 2X Challenge with an active role in the global 2X community. Together with partners, we help mobilize investment that advances women's economic empowerment and access to finance for women across the markets we operate.
