Who is our customer?
Nile Fresh Pty Ltd. (“Nile”, the “Company”) is a South-African B2B e-commerce platform linking commercial farmers to buyers of fresh produce and input suppliers. The Company delivers a convenient, secure, and transparent trading experience in a largely analogue market with significant inefficiencies and wastage. Farmers can list their available fruit and vegetables online, enabling institutional shoprites (e.g., retail chains, wholesalers) to place orders instantly.
What is our funding objective?
The funding objective is to support Nile in developing a fit-for-purpose Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) by engaging an external consultant. This system will address material risks such as food safety, occupational health and safety, pesticide management, and supply chain Environmental and Social (E&S) concerns. The funding enables the consultant—selected through a procurement process—to conduct an initial ESG audit, build the ESMS iteratively, and transfer essential knowledge to Nile’s operational and procurement leads, ultimately benefiting employees, founders, suppliers, and customers.
Why do we fund this investment?
The strategic relevance of funding this project through FMO’s Building Prospects facility lies in its alignment with the fund’s objective to promote sustainable private sector development in emerging markets. By supporting Nile’s Capacity Building Program, FMO contributes to strengthening E&S practices among a Ventures investee (where such capacity is often limited) through the deployment of external expertise. This ensures additionality by enabling the development of a tailored ESMS that addresses material risks, including food safety, occupational health and safety, pesticide management, and supply chain E&S concerns. The decision to deviate from FMO’s standard 50% cost share to a 75% contribution reflects the critical importance of the E&S dimension in this intervention. Moreover, the project supports Building Prospects’ criteria by fostering sustainable business practices, facilitating knowledge transfer, and enhancing stakeholder engagement across Nile’s operations, suppliers, and customer base.
What is the Environmental and Social categorization rationale?
This investment in Nile Fresh Pty Ltd is classified as Environmental and Social (E&S) risk category B, indicating that Nile Fresh may have limited E&S risks, which are typically site-specific and manageable with appropriate mitigation measures. Three areas were flagged as carrying significant E&S risks. In Logistics Management, potential risks are identified in the handling and transportation of agricultural products. In the Supplier Network, there could be a lack of clarity on supplier practices and compliance. Lastly, Agrochemical Distribution plans to expand into technical inputs, like pesticides, could raise concerns, especially regarding compliance with IFC Performance Standards.
