Who is our prospective customer?

Nile is a South African B2B e-commerce platform linking commercial farmers to buyers of fresh produce and input suppliers. The Company delivers a convenient, secure, and transparent trading experience in a largely analogous market with significant inefficiencies and wastage. The online marketplace is supported by services on logistics, payments, and insights to enable seamless transactions.

What is our funding objective?

The investment will enable the Company’s growth, further developing the online marketplace for fresh produce and inputs, scaling its operations and exploring additional services.

Why do we want to fund this investment?

Nile aims to substantially improve the fresh produce value chain, leading to reduced wastage and, ultimately, a more efficient food system.

What is the Environmental and Social categorization rationale?

This investment has E&S Category B, considering the limited adverse environmental and social (E&S) risks and the asset-light business model. The company does not carry out primary agriculture or agri-processing activities. IFC Performance Standard (PS) 1-4 triggered, while PS 5-8 are not triggered as Nile operates digitally without involving land acquisition, biodiversity impact, Indigenous peoples, or cultural heritage sites. The main risks are linked to (i) health and safety (including food safety) at warehouse and logistics, (ii) data privacy and security, (iii) screening of clients, and (iv) labor conditions in the company’s workforce. Currently, Nile’s operations are in an early stage. FMO can support the creation of an Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) and HR framework as operations grow.
