Who is our prospective customer?
Banco de la Producción S.A. Produbanco (Produbanco) is a universal bank in Ecuador and a subsidiary of Promerica Financial Corporation, a long-standing client of FMO. Produbanco is the fourth-largest bank in Ecuador, with total assets of USD 9.5 billion. The bank serves a broad client base across retail, SME, and corporate segments and has established activities in sustainable finance, including financing green projects and support for private sector development.
What is our funding objective?
This USD 20 million subordinated facility will support Produbanco in strengthening its Tier 2 capital base and overall balance sheet. The facility will be earmarked for eligible green projects, including renewable energy and energy efficiency investments, across various sectors and client segments, including SMEs and corporates. FMO will participate as the A-lender with a USD 10 million commitment and will mobilize an additional USD 10 million alongside the same instrument through Finance in Motion's Eco-Business Fund I as B-participants.
Why do we want to fund this investment?
FMO’s investment aims to support activities that contribute to climate mitigation and climate adaptation, contributing to SDG 13, in line with FMO's methodology to determine the green finance attribution. The facility will be earmarked for eligible green projects, including renewable energy and energy-efficiency investments. The transaction also supports Produbanco's sustainable finance strategy and its capacity to provide financing to SMEs, which play a significant role in employment generation and economic activity in Ecuador.
What is the Environmental and Social categorization rationale?
Produbanco is classified as Category A under FMO’s Sustainability Policy due to its sizeable corporate portfolio and exposure to sectors with potentially significant adverse environmental and social (E&S) risks, including agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, industrial manufacturing, power, and mining and quarrying. Key risks associated with these sectors include soil, air, and water pollution; land conversion and biodiversity impacts; poor labour and working conditions; impacts on vulnerable communities; and supply-chain and resource-efficiency risks. Produbanco manages these risks through an established Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS), implemented by a dedicated team of E&S professionals. Under the transaction, Produbanco is required to continue applying the EDFI Exclusion List, applicable Ecuadorian E&S laws and regulations, and the IFC Performance Standards to applicable transactions.
