Who is our prospective customer?

Banco del País ("Banpaís") is the fifth-largest bank in Honduras, with total assets of around USD 5.2 billion. The bank operates a diversified business model, serving retail, SME, and corporate clients through a comprehensive range of deposit, lending, transactional, and digital banking products. Banpaís has a nationwide footprint, supported by a network of 4,032 banking agents across all 18 departments and 298 municipalities. The bank is majority-owned by BiCapital Corporation, one of the largest financial conglomerates in Central America with operations spanning banking, insurance, and brokerage services across Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Panama.

What is our funding objective?

FMO is acting as a B participant, contributing with a USD 50 million senior unsecured loan. Proceeds aim to increase the bank's SME loan portfolio.

Why do we want to fund this investment?

Through this facility, FMO aims to support the development of SMEs in Honduras, thereby contributing to SDG 8.

What is the Environmental and Social categorization rationale?

As FMO participates under an A/B loan structure, the E&S assessment follows an asset-class approach. As a result, Banpaís has been classified as an E&S Risk Category B. Banpaís has an Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) in place, which was developed through the support of an international consultant. The framework is aligned with national legislation, as well as the IFC Performance Standards.
