Who is our prospective customer?

M-KOPA Group, founded in 2012, is a leading African fintech platform that provides affordable financial and digital products to "Every Day Earners" - the tenacious entrepreneurs who are the backbone of the continent's economies, who are often not able to access traditional financial services. The subsidiary, M-KOPA Kenya Mobility Ltd (subsidiary) was founded in 2023 with as its principal activities the sale and financing of electric motorbikes and electric batteries to customers in Kenya.

What is our funding objective?

FMO's senior debt funding will finance the Borrower's growing book of e-motorbikes receivables in Kenya (up to USD 23 million) and refinance a USD 7 million bridge facility provided by one of M-KOPA Group's shareholders to fund the early years of operations.

Why do we want to fund this investment?

The transaction addresses both i) the lack of clean mobility solutions and financial access to micro-entrepreneurs which holds back the shift to green affordable transport in Kenya, and ii) the availability of (local currency) debt financing which is a bottleneck for sector growth. The transaction is expected to receive 100% Green and 100% Reduced Inequalities labels.

What is the Environmental and Social categorization rationale?

E&S category is B. Activities come with potential limited adverse risks associated with waste management and labour conditions. The following IFC Performance Standards (PS) are triggered by the transaction: PS 1 Assessment and Management of Environmental and Social Risks and Impacts, PS 2 Labor and Working Condition, PS 3 Resource Efficiency and Pollution Prevention, PS 4 Community Health, Safety and Security. PS 5 is not triggered as there is no land acquisition (corporate facility). PS 6 is not triggered as the investment is not expected to have impact on Biodiversity and Living Natural Resources. PS 7 is not triggered because no impacts on local groups qualifying as Indigenous were identified. PS 8 is not triggered as no impact on cultural objects or places were identified.
