Who is our prospective customer?

Our investee is the Africa Forestry Impact Platform (AFIP), an established impact-driven investment platform focused on acquiring, managing, and scaling sustainable forestry assets across Sub-Saharan Africa. The platform is managed by New Forests, a global investment manager specializing in sustainable forestry with a strong track record in ESG integration and impact delivery.

What is our funding objective?

FMO is converting an option on an existing equity stake in Green Resources AS (now a portfolio company of AFIP) into the AFIP platform, thereby supporting the transition to a more diversified and institutionally managed forestry vehicle.

Why do we want to fund this investment?

This investment supports FMO’s strategic goals in forestry. By converting our Green Resources stake into AFIP, we are enabling the evolution from a single-company investment into a scalable platform model with greater reach, professional management, and a dedicated impact mandate. AFIP has the potential to demonstrate the viability of sustainable forestry investments in Africa and to mobilize additional capital towards the forestry sector.

What is the Environmental and Social categorization rationale?

This is a Category A investment, as AFIP is a forestry platform engaged in projects that potentially trigger all IFC Performance Standards (IFC PS). The sector inherently carries reputational risks, in part due to land issues and media scrutiny of the sector generally. The Fund Manager, New Forests, demonstrates good integration of E&S considerations into investment strategies and business development, including value-add opportunities. The organization has good capacity, with E&S accountability embedded at the senior management level, with E&S governance structures advising decision making, and supported by competent staff. The Fund maintains a good E&S policy framework aligned with international standards and demonstrates a clear understanding of forestry-specific requirements, such as the importance of FSC certification.
