news - Response of FMO to developments in the criminal investigation into the murder of Berta Cáceres

We have seen the media reports of the arrest of Mr. Castillo, President of DESA. We have continually called on the Honduran authorities to bring those responsible for the brutal murder of Berta Cáceres to justice, and have expressed concern that the ongoing criminal investigation has not yet resulted in a court ruling.

We express our deepest condolences with the family and friends of Berta Cáceres, a well-respected Honduran human rights defender. 

Following the murder, we suspended operations in respect of the Agua Zarca Hydro Power Project in 2016. On July 3, 2017, we exited the project and ended our contractual financing relationship with DESA.
