FMO today published a revised Sustainability Policy Universe (SPU), following a comprehensive review and public consultation process. The updated framework strengthens clarity around how FMO implements its sustainability commitments and reflects recent policy developments, operational practices, and the ambitions of Strategy 2030.
The Sustainability Policy Universe is our overarching framework for managing sustainability risks and impacts and guiding the integration of sustainability considerations into investment decision-making. The framework consists of the Sustainability Policy, eight Position Statements, and the Exclusion List.
The review was undertaken to maintain the ambition of FMO's sustainability commitments while improving clarity, consistency, and practical application across the framework. The revised SPU does not introduce significant changes to FMO's investment approach. One exception relates to expiration of the five-year transition period announced in 2021 and confirms that FMO will no longer make new direct investments in gas-fired power generation and directly connected transmission infrastructure.

Further clarification of the SPU's scope of application and differentiated implementation approach, including how context, leverage, and partnerships influence implementation.
Public consultation
Between May and June 2026, FMO invited external stakeholders to provide feedback on proposed changes to the Sustainability Policy, Human Rights Position Statement, and Combined Position Statement on Fossil Fuels. The remaining documents did not undergo material revisions and were therefore included, but not highlighted in the scope of the public consultation process.
The updated Sustainability Policy Universe and related investment criteria are effective for all new investments from September 1, 2026.
