Your role

We are looking for a Senior Investment Officer (SIO) for the Energy (EN) department at FMO. The Senior Investment Officer plays a key role in the team. They lead business origination and strategy development, and supervise negotiation of new transactions. Also, they manage and coordinate multi-disciplinary deal teams. The SIO will oversee the credit approval and contracting process, internal and external relationship management, and coaching of junior investment professionals.

The Senior Investment Officer will be assigned to a regional team.

The ideal SIO has

  • Extensive financial expertise in structuring, negotiation, and execution of project and corporate finance transactions, with a preference for the energy sector.
  • Business development and innovation, identifying and implementing new opportunities, including pioneering concepts for FMO.
  • Client relationship management, building strong partnerships through deep understanding of business environments, risks, and challenges.
  • Strategic investment screening, assessing potential investments based on sector trends, financial strength, reputation, and market fit.
  • Balanced leadership, combining entrepreneurial drive with risk awareness, ensuring E&S/human rights standards while facilitating transactions, and mentoring investment staff

Your team

The Energy sector has been prioritized by FMO as one of three strategic sectors. The Energy department has been a front-runner in implementing the sustainability framework within FMO and has shown to be innovative while exploring new investment sub-sectors such as distributed energy solutions.

The department comprises about 60 professionals focusing on senior debt and mezzanine finance. We maintain close relations with the (energy) colleagues from the Private Equity department. FMO aims to build a substantial portfolio of sustainable investments that realize steady and market-driven returns. The department has four regional teams servicing our target markets: The East & Southern Africa (ESAF), West & North Africa and Middle East (WA/MENA), Asia & Eastern Europe (Asia/ECA), and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

Each regional team works across two sub teams: a Business Development group focusing on new business in the region and a Portfolio Management group responsible for managing the existing clients in the region. The main activity of a Senior Investment Officer is in the business development group. A pool of insurance, compliance, environmental, and social officers supports the team.

Your background

  • Master’s degree – preferably in economics or business administration.
  • 10+ years relevant corporate and/or project finance experience, preferably in energy markets.
  • Proven track record in deal origination, structuring and execution in emerging markets.
  • An existing network in the renewable energy space in emerging markets
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • International working experience.
  • Availability to travel.
