Accelerating the Energy Transition in Emerging Markets

‘Future of Energy’ to tackle the challenges of accelerating the energy transition in EMDEs

On 29 February and 1 March 2024, FMO and Solarplaza will, for the 5th time, host their joint 'Future of Energy' summit in Amsterdam. This high-level event unites a global mix of top project developers, financial institutions and investors, service providers, and asset owners to tackle the critical strategic challenges of accelerating the renewable energy transition in emerging markets around the world.

The global energy access gap persists, as 675 million people still lack access to electricity and over 2.3 billion people continue to rely on harmful cooking fuels. This year marks the halfway point for achieving the SDGs by 2030, but it’s become clear that the world is not on track to achieve SDG 7 (“affordable and clean energy for all”) in time. Though, globally, the international energy crisis has stimulated the deployment of renewables, IRENA estimates show that financial flow in support of clean energy in low- and middle-income countries has actually decreased since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The global energy and climate future largely hinges on emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) successfully transitioning to cleaner energy systems. For EMDEs, accelerating the deployment of renewable energy can be a significant opportunity to bolster their energy access and security, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and meet net-zero targets. Currently, only a fraction of global clean energy investments flows into EMDEs. How can we reinforce the urgency to shift the world’s attention and capital to the Global South and harness the potential, momentum, and new enhancements of RE technology to overcome regional challenges related to uncertain policy and regulatory frameworks, the rising cost of capital, and the perceived increase of investment risks?

'Future of Energy' is a must-attend event for everyone rising to the challenge of RE project development & financing in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. For this 5th edition of the conference, the thematic scope will encompass renewable energy in the broadest sense, including hybrid (wind & solar) applications, green hydrogen, energy storage, e-mobility, distributed energy, and grid infrastructure. Experts on stage will shine a light on energy efficiency in EMDEs, maximization of mini-grid deployment, and the growth of the C&I and distributed generation segments. The program will also highlight alternative energy offtake structures, ESG risk management, and the role of hydrogen in global decarbonization.

The global energy and climate future largely depends on emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) successfully transitioning to cleaner energy systems. Together with Solarplaza, we have provided an infographic offering you a snapshot of the latest numbers on solar and wind deployment in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. These insights show that only a fraction of global clean energy investments flow into low and middle-income countries, and how a shift in capital direction is vital to bridging the persisting energy access gap. With an emphasis on networking opportunities, interactive panel discussions, and world-class keynotes, 'Future of Energy' will condense a year of business development into two days of learning and invaluable network-building. Register here today.
