Dealing with the urban housing crisis brewing in the global south

July 10, 2017

The global affordable housing gap is set to rise to 440 million households comprising 1.6 billion people by 2025. In this report, the World Resources Institute defines the main challenges to providing adequate and secure housing as the growth of sub-standard developments, over-emphasis on home ownership, and policies or laws that push the most disadvantaged populations out of the city. Three solutions are proposed: participatory upgrading of informal settlements, promoting rental housing, and allocating under-utilised urban land to affordable housing.
