Tourism is the largest contributor to financing protected areas in many countries, but the opportunities offered by tourism arte often under-utilised. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has drawn up guidelines to help protected area authorities maximise the potential economic return while promoting conservation and sustainable tourism. Though the report focuses on recommendations for concessions, it also covers other options for partnerships with the private sector including licences, leases and permits.
