Paris Agreement on Climate Change

December 8, 2015

Almost all countries have signed on to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, which aims to keep global temperatures “well below” the level of 2.0 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The goal is to limit the amount of greenhouse gases emitted through human activity and for richer countries to help finance poorer countries both in their transition to renewable energy and adaptation to the effects of climate change. Under the agreement, countries make voluntary pledges for cutting emissions, with further reviews of the agreement to be conducted starting next year, then every five years after that.
