Information for Dutch embassies

Enabling entrepreneurs to increase inclusive and sustainable prosperity

Dutch embassies are often among the first to identify promising businesses, sectors and investment opportunities. FMO welcomes collaboration with embassies seeking to advance private sector development, climate action and inclusive economic growth in emerging markets.

On this page, you can learn what FMO finances, how we add value beyond financing, and which opportunities are typically outside our scope.

How FMO supports private sector development

FMO finances private-sector companies and projects that are commercially viable, deliver development impact, and contribute to a more sustainable future. We operate in more than 85 countries and focus on three sectors:

  • Energy – renewable energy, energy access, transmission, distribution and storage solutions.
  • Agribusiness, Food & Forestry – sustainable agriculture, food value chains, forestry and agribusinesses that support farmer livelihoods and food security.
  • Financial Institutions – local banks and financial institutions that increase access to finance for SMEs and underserved entrepreneurs.
FMO invests where financing is not yet readily available and where the potential for development impact is high. By providing financing, expertise and mobilizing other investors, we help businesses grow, strengthen markets and pave the way for increased private sector investment over time.

Is this opportunity a fit for FMO?

FMO may be a good fit when you encounter:

  • A company or project seeking long-term investment capital
  • An opportunity that can contribute to jobs, incomes, climate action or economic development
  • A business that has the potential to grow and attract additional investors
  • A project where commercial financing is not yet readily available

Beyond financing, FMO helps companies strengthen their environmental and social performance, improve governance, access international networks and attract additional investors. For many clients, our involvement serves as a quality signal that helps attract additional investors and lenders. We often work with other development finance institutions, commercial banks and institutional investors to increase the overall financing available for impactful projects.

Opportunities that are usually outside our scope

FMO is generally not the right organization for:

  • Grant funding requests
  • Very small businesses with limited growth potential
  • Projects that can already obtain sufficient funding from commercial financiers
  • Businesses that are not willing to improve their environmental, social and governance standards

As a development bank, FMO typically focuses on larger investments and generally works with financing tickets starting from around  €10 million.

Supporting sustainable economic ties

FMO's investments contribute to stronger local economies and more resilient markets. Over time, this can create opportunities for Dutch companies to engage as investors, suppliers, buyers or partners, while supporting sustainable development objectives.
