Our Employee Value Proposition (EVP)

Make the difference at FMO.

At FMO, you can make the difference. You can contribute to a better world. Recognized as one of the most entrepreneurial development banks, we strongly believe that ‘doing makes the difference’. We offer careers in a stimulating workplace for people who share our sense of purpose, who want to contribute to overcoming complex global challenges, like climate change and inequality. In light of these challenges, we value people who take action and responsibility.

We are a Dutch organization with a diverse and international workforce. We are inclusive and professional, and we collaborate to ensure everyone can thrive and perform at their best. In our day-to-day working environment, we combine business focus with empathy and care, ensuring the safety and well-being of our colleagues.

As a development bank, we strive to stay competitive with our compensation and benefits packages and we provide a broad range of career opportunities.

We believe that when people learn and develop both personally and professionally, and when they actively help shape the organization, FMO will continue to grow and improve its performance.

Purpose

‘Doing makes the difference’ is more than just an expression of our entrepreneurial spirit. It is exactly the attitude that is needed to maximize our impact. We do this by providing additional financing to the private sector in low- and middle-income countries, enabling entrepreneurs to enhance inclusive and sustainable prosperity through our financial products, expertise, and networks. At FMO, we believe every job, role, and contribution matters; all our colleagues can add value to our mission and purpose.

Company culture and leadership

Our diverse and international workforce makes us proud and provides us with valuable cross-cultural insights. By attracting talent from various countries, we safeguard a deep internal understanding of working within and across the different cultures of the regions where we operate. In fact, we believe the collective expertise of our multinational workforce is key to the organization’s success in making the difference.

Our core values — Diversity, Integrity, Making the difference, and Quality— form the foundation of our company culture and help guide the execution of our strategy and our day-to-day work.

We foster a culture that is collaborative and inclusive, and we firmly believe that being open to new and diverse perspectives and ideas leads to better and more balanced decision-making. We are committed to high integrity standards and have zero tolerance for undesirable behavior. We encourage colleagues to raise concerns with their peers, management or through the appropriate channels to speak up. As professionals we hold ourselves and one another accountable for agreements we make and the results we achieve. We recognize that there is always room for improvement. We encourage our colleagues to actively contribute and collaborate internally and externally to maximize our impact.

We expect leadership by example, and for everyone to foster the One FMO spirit. We want our leadership team to help people grow, and guide and support them to remove obstacles that hinder their success. In addition, our leaders are expected to listen, provide support, empower their team(s), and build connections to stimulate cross-organizational collaboration. Guided by our values and the related behaviors, we shape our culture together.

Compensation and benefits

As a development bank, we strive to be competitive in the compensation and benefits we offer. Transparency is key, and we ensure our colleagues have a clear understanding of their benefits and compensation options. Certain benefits, such as buying or selling leave days or increasing pension contributions, can be flexibly tailored to suit individual preferences. We recognize and reward performance through, for example, incentives such as professional development programs, and opportunities within projects. We have several flexible leave options. For international colleagues relocating to the Netherlands for the first time, we provide comprehensive support to ensure a smooth onboarding experience.

Career development and learning

We are committed to creating equal opportunities and support colleagues in developing their careers at FMO. We encourage and empower them to take ownership of their personal and professional growth, ensuring they feel challenged, continue to evolve, and stay future-ready. To foster this development, we offer a range of learning and development opportunities.

We are committed to transparency regarding career opportunities within FMO. For our vacancies, we encourage internal candidates to apply, and we bring in external talent when specialized skills or additional capacity are needed. Besides taking steps up the career ladder, we encourage colleagues to broaden their development by exploring opportunities in other job functions. Colleagues can opt for leadership or specialist career paths.

We value a culture of continuous learning, open dialogue, and feedback. We encourage open-mindedness and continuously seek ways to innovate, improve and enhance efficiency.

We view mistakes as opportunities for growth, and we make an effort to learn from them and build upon what works well. Next to providing space for developing new initiatives in every role, we also offer mentoring and coaching programs, as well as opportunities to learn or lead by participating in projects or specific employee groups.

Working conditions and well-being

At FMO, we facilitate the mental and physical well-being and (travel) safety of our colleagues. We balance business focus with empathy and personal attention. To support a healthy work-life balance, we provide flexible working options, such as hybrid arrangements and the possibility to work from abroad. We also offer different forms of leave, including vitality leave, to encourage colleagues to prioritize their health and well-being. By joining our internal communities, sport events and other regular social events, colleagues can make meaningful connections across the organization.

We are committed to social responsibility and doing things in a sustainable way wherever we can. Although we continue to visit our clients and investees, we constantly strive to reduce our footprint. We encourage our colleagues to use public transport and offer compensation per kilometer for walking or cycling to the office. Our offices are run with a zero-waste ambition, and we partner with others to be as circular as possible. Additionally, we offer healthy, affordable lunches to both colleagues and guests, promoting a sustainable lifestyle.

At FMO we are motivated to deliver our best to contribute to a better world, making the difference together, as One FMO.
