Your role

The Agribusiness Food Water team is currently looking for an enthusiastic Investment Officer (IO) to develop and support FMO's growing agribusiness sector portfolio in the SADC region, based in Johannesburg. The team in Johannesburg works closely with the sector teams in The Netherlands. The Investment Officer (IO) will directly report to the Regional Manager based in Johannesburg as well as to the Africa Manager of the Agribusiness Department based in Den Haag (Matrix). The activities of this Investment Officer will be across the geographies in SADC region and will involve:

  • Business development/origination activities in the SADC food & agribusiness sector.
  • Coordinate with the Hague based team to execute impactful debt transactions in Africa's food and agriculture sector.

  • Support in negotiation/contracting process of debt transactions in collaboration with the legal team.
  • Manage and monitor the portfolio of existing clients by deepening relationships and taking overall responsibility for client portfolio, ensuring quality, and managing risk. 

  • Coach junior team members as needed, providing context on work delegated to analysts and associates and ensuring clarity on role/task division.

  • Active participation in defining the AFW strategy/business plan collaborating with the manager and colleagues.

  • Shares explicit industry, regional and client insights with the team and department.

  • Participating in department or organization-wide projects.

  • Local Representation of all FMO activities will be needed from time to time.

The AFW Africa team consists of 12 investment professionals with diverse backgrounds who are located across our offices in The Hague, Johannesburg and Nairobi. This vacancy is based in Johannesburg. 

Your background

  • Master’s degree in economics, business Administration, or similar studies.
  • Minimum of 7- 10 years corporate finance/banking experience with at least 5 years' experience in Food & Agribusiness.
  • Proven track-record in sourcing, structuring, writing high quality credit proposals and
  • Designing and documenting of finance products.
  • Client relationship management experience and in-depth credit knowledge.
  • Existing network in SADC region (e.g., food & agribusiness companies, banks, funds, consultants etc.)
  • Regional working experience would be a strong advantage.
