Most of global population faces water scarcity risk

November 15, 2017

More than 60% of the world’s population lives in areas where the supply of water cannot meet demand sustainably, according to a report from the World Bank Group. Water scarcity already is responsible for losses of food production that could feed 81 million people every year. The effects of drought and flood, as well as over-exploitation of water supplies, urgently call for the development of policies that encourage responsible water management. A focus on supply-side solutions, as well a ‘natural capital’ approach, can provide inexpensive options to tackle these issues, the report says.
