Your role

The Senior Investment Officer (SIO) who will join the PE Energy team will be in a unique position of combining business development and origination activities with the execution of new transactions, as well as relationship management activities. The SIO is a core member of the PE Energy team that is responsible for achieving the annual business plan set out for the PE Energy team as part of the overall business plan of the Private Equity department. She/he will take the lead in the full lifecycle of investing, including deal sourcing, screening, and selection, structuring investments, obtaining internal approvals, negotiating, contracting, and portfolio management. As part of the portfolio management activities, the SIO actively participates in AC and shareholder meetings, representing FMO’s interests. The SIO has overall responsibility for quality and timelines of all internal documents related to the designated portfolio (e.g., reviews, FVs, change and waiver requests, disbursements, and IRC memos).

The SIO builds strong relationships with investees as well as other relevant parties that are active in the relevant geographic region, by understanding their business, the environment they operate in, and the risks and challenges they face. As the team intends to follow a strategic approach towards deal sourcing, the SIO will also be responsible for the development of client account plans and providing input to the team's business plan and strategy documents.

The SIO actively coaches Investment Officers, Associates, and Investment Analysts in the team, and provides context on work delegated to / performed by them. Ensures clarity on role/task division. The SIO provides input and feedback to Investment Analysts and Associates on reviews, change requests, disbursement memos, and on their part of the investment proposals. The SIO acts as a role model in alignment with agreed priorities. As part of the Private Equity department, she/he is also expected to contribute to broader organizational topics and projects from time to time.

Your team

Private Equity (PE) is an important part of FMO's business as capital for small to large energy projects and for mid-sized companies is scarce in most emerging markets. FMO invests in private equity funds and makes direct investments in Financial Institutions, Renewable Energy projects and Energy Transition Businesses. The Private Equity department is looking for a Senior Investment Officer for its Energy team. This team is a diverse team (5 different nationalities), consisting of people who have a passion for investing while creating development impact.

Your background

  • At least 10 years of relevant work experience in the energy sector and direct private equity, preferably in emerging markets.
  • A master’s degree – preferably in finance, economics, engineering, or business administration
  • Proven track record in deal origination, structuring, execution, and portfolio management in emerging markets.
  • Relevant network in emerging markets private equity energy
  • Experience with FMO’s ESG, impact, and KYC processes strongly preferred.

Relevant skills & competencies

  •  Relevant experience in the Renewable Energy and Energy Transition sector
  •  Excellent analytical/financial modelling, research, and problem-solving skills at transaction, investee,   and portfolio management level.
  •  Proven track record in sourcing and executing transactions, showing ability to source (co-)   investments, to build a trustworthy relationship with investees, and persuade and influence at the   transaction level.
  •  Ability to effectively strike the balance between facilitating investments at acceptable risk/return   levels and upholding E&S / human rights standards.
  • Trusted and respected counterpart for external partners (fund managers, other institutional investors, and DFIs) and credibility with internal stakeholders (MO, Legal, Credit). Able to bring critical feedback constructively to improve processes, systems, and investment outcomes.
  • Leads by example, displaying strong team skills, contributing to team success, and to a constructive, positive, and collaborative work environment.
  • Writes in a clear and structured way, paying appropriate attention to detail.
  • Displays strong risk awareness while thinking creatively with an entrepreneurial focus.
  • Forms a well-underpinned view on investments and portfolio management topics and constructively challenges proposals in a team setting.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to proactively communicate on relevant portfolio achievements/ developments within the department and across FMO.
  • Has a critical, yet ‘can-do’, solution-oriented attitude and a clear affinity with FMO’s values.
