FMO was founded in 1970 by the Dutch government, private sector, employers and employee organizations. Since its inception, FMO’s aim has been to empower entrepreneurship in emerging economies in order to further development. In investing in entrepreneurship, we have applied best practices, adopted international performance standards and created our own benchmarks if they did not already exist.
We believe in practicing what we preach, so we implement the same governance standards we expect from our clients. We have a two-tier management structure comprising a Management Board and a Supervisory Board. You can read profiles of their members in our Management structure page.
We actively look for partnerships with interested local, international and Dutch parties. Thanks to an extensive partner network, built up over more than 30 years, we have rooted ourselves in both the developing countries and the sectors with which we work. Cooperation with partners also mobilizes more funding than any single investor could provide alone.
Though based in the Netherlands, FMO’s area of operation is international – and our colleagues come from all over the globe. Contributing to the development of the private sector in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America requires close cooperation with our domestic and international partners, clients and each other.
